Osaka Bounces Back At Indian Wells

World number one Naomi Osaka on Saturday launched her Indian Wells title defense with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 65th-ranked Kristina Mladenovic of France.

A break to begin the second set put her in complete control before another gritty hold for 4-2, although there would be a brief stumble.

"Those are the matches I know can help me to get some big results", said Wawrinka, who is now ranked 40th in the world.

Her surprise triumph at Indian Wells past year launched a 2018 campaign that would eventually include her first Grand Slam crown with a victory at the U.S. Open. "After that things went better for me", added the Serbian, who dominated the second set to book a third-round meeting with German Philipp Kohlschreiber, a 6-4, 6-4 victor over Australian Nick Kyrgios.

"Today I just fought and tried my hardest", said Williams, now ranked 36th in the world.

He next faces Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Spain's Roberto Carbralles. Friday it was Serena subduing Victoria Azarenka in an epic, and yesterday Venus authored her own incredible win, taking down Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Five-time Indian Wells champion Roger Federer thwarted a second-set challenge from Peter Gojowczyk to reach the third round of the ATP Masters event on Sunday with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

In the press conference after her first win at the Indian Wells 2019, Osaka spoke about the inconveniences which are caused to her while playing night matches.

"The preparation prior to the Australian Open was good because I had trained well but I did not play matches".

American Sampras, a 14-time Grand Slam victor, was in the stands as the Serb beat Fratangelo 7-6 (7-5) 6-2. It was just her eighth match of the year. I was so frustrated with myself from the half of the second set to the end, which shouldn't happen to me.

"I had a few bad volleys that cost me a break back, but I kept fighting, executing the plan", said Mladenovic.

Elsewhere on Saturday, fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova shook off a slow start to defeat Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi 6-7 (4/7), 6-1, 6-1.

"I injured my tendon, then when I came back to play in Paris Bercy, I had an abdominal injury, [and then] I injured my foot a little".

Third seed Alexander Zverev is also through after opening opponent Martin Kližan of Slovakia retired when trailing the German 6-2, 2-0.

"I didn't play my best".

Russian 14th seed Daniil Medvedev is also through after he dismissed American Mackenzie McDonald 7-5 6-0 and he will face Filip Krajinovic next after the Serb conquered 20th-seeded Belgian David Goffin 6-3 6-3.
