‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett pleads not guilty

The actor unexpectedly showed up at a procedural hearing on March 12 for his California-based primary defense lawyer Mark Geragos to enter the necessary paperwork to represent Smollett in the state of IL.

Smollett said "not guilty" as his lawyer entered the plea. Some of his siblings were present to support him, and sat near the back of the courtroom.

The judge will then likely ask Smollett to enter a plea. Trial Judge Steven Watkins also expanded Jussie's travel restrictions, allowing him to travel to Los Angeles and NY to meet with his legal team.

Smollett will next appear in court on April 17.

Smollett also was in court Tuesday for a hearing to determine whether a judge should allow cameras in court. "And we look forward to complete transparency and the truth coming out". Police say Smollett also told detectives the attackers also yelled he was in "MAGA country", an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan that some Trump critics have decried as racist and discriminatory.

What's insane, though, is that Jussie's on-screen character, Jamal, was dealing with issues with the media in last night's episode.

"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett has plead not guilty to multiple charges of disorderly conduct. He says the men beat him, used racial and homophobic slurs, poured an unknown substance on him and wrapped a noose around his neck before fleeing.

Fox cut Smollett's character in "Empire" after he was arrested.

He was charged in February with felony disorderly conduct.

The actor's attorney Mark Geragos called the indictment "vindictive" and "prosecutorial overkill".

"The fact of an indictment was not unexpected", the statement read. We knew that there is no way they would expose their evidence to a public airing and subject their witnesses to cross-examination.

Smollett maintains his innocence.

"Meanwhile, following the news of his indictment, Chief Communications Officer of the Chicago Police Department Anthony Guglielmi tweeted: ".

Smollett has denied any involvement in orchestrating an attack.

Smollett has maintained that he is a victim and denied all allegations that he staged the incident.
