House Democrats request President Trump's tax returns, seek filings from 2013

The answer is not clear. "We will examine the request and we will follow the law. and we will protect the president as we would protect any taxpayer" regarding their right to privacy, Mnuchin said.

Neal also sought the returns from eight business entities associated with Trump, and details on those.

"The Democrats decided the day after the election that they would not accept it", he said. "The point of all of this is to examine to the extent to which the IRS is auditing and enforcing federal tax law on the President of the United States". "I can tell you right now, those tax documents would not be leaked under my tutelage" as Ways and Means chairman, Neal said. And at least 18 states have considered legislation to require presidential candidates to release their tax returns in order to appear on ballots this year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures database. Trump, a Republican and wealthy businessman, did not do so.

He has said that the returns would answer the question of whether the president was financially beholden to Russian Federation, and how he personally would benefit from the Republican tax bill he signed into law.

The Massachusetts Democrat requested earlier Wednesday for the IRS to release Mr. Trump's tax returns from 2013 to 2018.

It is all but certain that the administration will take steps to challenge the Democratic interpretation of the law on which the request is based.

"The IRS has a policy of auditing the tax returns of all sitting presidents and vice-presidents, yet little is known about the effectiveness of this program", Neal said in a statement accompanying the release of the letter.

Neal, who was facing increasing pressure from liberal activists to speed up a meticulous process of requesting the returns, insisted his move was about "policy not politics", in a letter to the IRS. He asked for the documents in seven days, setting an April 10 deadline.

House panel approves subpoena for Mueller report
It's a game-changer", Gene Rossi, a former Department of Justice prosecutor, said. Mueller's team is specifically anxious that Barr's letter shaped public opinion.

In his latest warning to Mexico to tighten border security, Trump threatened earlier on Thursday to eventually slap tariffs on vehicle imports from Mexico unless it did more to stop drug trafficking.

Neal's authority to seek the president's tax returns stems from Section 6103 of the tax code that stipulates the Treasury Secretary "shall" furnish tax-writing committees "with any return or return information" requested for an individual. "Presidents have never been forced to release it, they volunteered to release those tax returns".

"We're under audit despite what people said, and we're working that out as I'm always under audit it seems". "The President's action clearly violates the Appropriations Clause by stealing from appropriated funds, an action that was not authorized by constitutional or statutory authority", Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress, said in a statement.

Neal said he could not provide a time frame for how the litigation will play out. "I would hope that we would not be doing that sort of thing".

Ocasio-Cortez's tweet referred to the House Ways and Means Committee's request to the IRS for six years of the president's tax records.

Trump and his administration are expected to fight the request, launching a lengthy battle that might only be resolved by the Supreme Court, and extending the fight over his tax returns into the 2020 campaign or beyond.

Neal noted that it has only been three months since Democrats took control of the House. "And we're not walking away just because you say "no" the first time around".
