U.S. and Turkey Standoff Over F-35 and Russia's S-400

In Washington, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu repeated his government's stance that the purchase of the S-400 is a "done deal", but sought to reassure allies that it will not pose a threat to the military alliance.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday vowed to go ahead with a deal to purchase Russian missiles despite Washington's suspension of Turkey's participation in a USA jet program because of security concerns over the Russian deal.

"He stated it was wrong to impose any sanctions against the alliance's member states because we need each other".

Officials have said that Turkey's acquisition of both USA and Russian systems could give Moscow access to sophisticated American technology and allow it to find ways to counter the F-35. Russian Federation will deliver the first batch of the defence batteries in late 2019.

Hours before foreign ministers from the 29-member Western alliance opened talks in Washington with a leisurely reception, Vice President Mike Pence delivered a stinging rebuke both to Germany over its level of defense spending and to Turkey for buying a major arms system from Russian Federation.

Speaking at a gathering in Washington to mark Nato's 70th anniversary, Mr Pence said: "Turkey must choose".

Meanwhile, Russia and Turkey remain in talks over the delivery date for S-400 parts, originally slated for May.

Pence, bluntly, said "Turkey risks expulsion form the joint F-35 program" over the S-400.

"The reception the secretary general's address received in Congress demonstrated enduring strong bipartisan support for USA participation in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and support for the alliance", said Ali Wyne, a policy analyst with the Rand Corporation. -Turkish committee of technical experts should examine the American claim that Turkey's possession of the missile defense system would compromise the new technology in the F-35. Washington responded earlier this week by suspending Turkey's participation in the F-35 fighter-jet program, in which Turkey has invested over $1 billion.

Turkey's foreign minister also said he doubted the existence of a USA peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians - an effort that Trump's son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner has been leading for the U.S.

While Vice President Mike Pence's speech at the #NATOEngages conference echoed President Donald Trump in his strong criticism of Germany, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as the host, hit a softer tone and did not single out Germany in his public remarks.

She said the U.S. package was designed "to assure that there is a safe passage for Ukrainian vessels through the Kerch Strait". He also suggested that United States officials may well be concerned that Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan might try to compensate for his recent electoral defeats in Istanbul and Ankara by attacking the Kurds.

Spokesperson Hami Aksoy accused the State Department of having written its readout before the meeting had even taken place and said that it included things that were never brought up.
