As Mueller release nears, White House renews attacks

United States attorney general William P Barr told lawmakers Tuesday he hopes to release the full Mueller report into Russian meddling "within a week", which would be mid-April as he had previously indicated.

"You're darn right I'm going after them again", Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's attorneys, told The Associated Press.

Democrats have raised questions about how Barr was so quickly able to boil down Mueller's report into four pages.

Mr. Barr later released a four-page letter to Congress laying out what he said were Mr. Mueller's main findings and wrote that the Mueller probe did not establish that members of Mr. Trump's election campaign conspired with Russian Federation.

Barr's answers did not appear to satisfy Democrats, who repeatedly urged Barr to release the full report and fully explain any redactions that Barr decided to make.

Nonetheless, Democrats have blasted him for not releasing the report immediately and have accused him of selectively picking from Mueller's report so that the conclusions were as favorable as possible for President Trump.

Nadler and Democrats say they won't be satisfied with a redacted copy; they want Mueller's full conclusions and his full supporting material.

"If you think it's such an outrageous position, you have nothing to worry about", Barr said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also weighed in to object to Barr's proposed redactions. He later described in a March 29 follow-up letter what kind of material would be redacted and announced he meant to release the report by mid-April, if not sooner. In a March 29 letter to lawmakers, he spelled out four areas that would be redacted: grand jury material, which could include any documents and testimony presented; information that could reveal the government's intelligence-gathering sources or methods; information that could compromise ongoing investigations; and details that would violate the privacy of those deemed "peripheral" to the investigation.

USA labels Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group
Following the announcement, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Mr Bolton said labelling the IRGC as terrorists was "the rightful designation".

Testifying before the House Appropriations Subcommittee, ostensibly to discuss other matters, Barr told representatives that he is preparing to release the report within a week.

Barr's four-page synopsis of Mueller's report said that the Special Counsel did not find that anyone in Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation to interfere in the election and that Mueller did not reach a conclusion about whether Trump sought to obstruct justice. "I do not believe it would be in the public's interest for me to attempt to summarize the full report or to release it in serial or piecemeal fashion".

Facing the intensifying concerns from Democrats that he may have whitewashed Mueller's findings, Barr has twice moved to defend, or at least explain, his handling of the process since receiving the special counsel's report.

"The Democrats will never be satisfied, no matter what they get, how much they get, or how many pages they get".

"If the Supreme Court rules that Obamacare is out, we'll have a plan that is far better than Obamacare", President Donald Trump said last month. "As things stand now, I don't think that they will be redacted".

Barr said he would elaborate at hearings scheduled by the House and Senate Judiciary committees at the beginning of next month.

"From my standpoint, within a week, I will be in a position to release the report to the public", Barr said.

Representative Robert Aderholt of Alabama, the subcommittee's top Republican, said it was unfortunate that "so numerous questions here this morning are going toward a "grassy knoll" conspiracy theory regarding the Mueller report".

While the Judiciary Committee is leading congressional efforts to obtain the full Mueller report, Serrano and Lowey said after the hearing that the Appropriations Committee could also play a role in pressuring the Justice Department, given their control of the DOJ budget.
