Barr reviewing origins of FBI's Russia investigation

House Democrats are prepping a swift response to Attorney General William Barr's plans to release a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report within the next week, after Barr's first public comments Tuesday did little to quell the Democratic anger over Barr's rollout of the special counsel probe.

Others have said Barr made the right decision on the obstruction question, noting that it is hard to prove that Trump committed criminal obstruction if Mueller did not find that he destroyed evidence or directly interfered with the investigation - even though he assailed the inquiry as a "witch hunt" and called the investigators partisan zealots.

Last, Barr stated he intends to redact information that implicates the privacy or repetitional interests "of peripheral players where there was a decision not to charge them". "And so I think that from my standpoint, within a week I will be in a position to release the report to the public".

Democrats scolded Barr over his handling of the report, telling him they were concerned that a summary of its main conclusions he released last month portrayed the investigation's findings in an overly favourable way for President Donald Trump.

Barr did not commit to providing the full report to Congress, despite requests by Democratic lawmakers. He also said that Mueller presented evidence "on both sides" about whether Trump obstructed justice, but he did not draw a conclusion one way or the other.

Secondly, any information that would reveal "intelligence sources and methods", Barr testified.

Lowey went on to call the quick turnaround on Barr's letter to Congress "more suspicious than impressive". Only 19 days into his job as acting attorney general, Barr ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to mount a rescue mission.

Aderholt was referring to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation used to surveil former Trump campaign associate Carter Page over the course of a year.

Donald Trump vows to put tariffs on $11 billion of European Union products
Trump in June previous year imposed tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on imported aluminum from the EU. The EU has taken advantage of the USA on trade for many years.

Congressional Republicans - and the president - have alleged that officials improperly relied on that dossier to obtain a secret warrant to spy on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. While Burr said he didn't know exactly what's in the report, he added, "but there are going to be things that maybe cause some people to say, 'Oh, gosh, I didn't know that existed'".

Rep. Jerry Nadler of NY, the Democratic chairman of the House committee, tweeted Monday that he planned to eventually call Mueller to testify.

Barr was repeatedly grilled about the coming redaction of the Mueller report.

The multi-pronged approach is the clearest sign yet that Barr's release of a redacted report will not stop the brewing showdown between House Democrats and the Trump administration over the 22-month special counsel investigation.

LOWEY: "I just hope that we as members of Congress are going to have the complete report".

Barr is likely to testify on May 1 before the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee.

Although Mr Barr admitted that he will release the report quickly, he also confirmed that he will not provide Congress with an unredacted version.

Trump seems to have belatedly recognized the political danger.

Trump has said he will not use a legal doctrine called executive privilege, which allows a president to withhold information about internal executive branch deliberations from other branches of government, to block portions of the report.
