What does a black hole look like? We're about to find out

Using a global network of telescopes to see "the unseeable", an worldwide scientific team on Wednesday announced a milestone in astrophysics - the first-ever photo of a black hole - in an achievement that validated a pillar of science put forward by Albert Einstein more than a century ago.

Scientists on Wednesday revealed the first image ever made of a black hole, depicting its hot, shadowy edges where light bends around itself in a cosmic funhouse effect.

News conferences were held in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo to disclose a "groundbreaking result" from the Event Horizon Telescope project, begun in 2012 to directly observe a black hole using a global network of telescopes and worldwide cooperation of more than 200 researchers.

The black hole lies at the center of the Messier 87 (M87), a giant elliptical galaxy located 55 million light-years from Earth in the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies.

Its mass is 6 1/2 billion times that of the sun and it was in a "modest active state" at the time of the photo, according to Sera Markoff, a member of the Event Horizon Telescope Science Council.

Event Horizon 'Scope tweeted the news earlier today alongside the recently acquired photo, which you can check out below!

The cool image was possible with two years of computer analysis of observations from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global network of radio antennas.

Most news outlets are only showing the blurry zoomed in picture of the black hole so I'm posting the entire zoomed-out image of the black hole and everything it is consuming. Until then, we'll be admiring this dark abyss in all its emo glory. "We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole", Sheperd Doeleman, of Harvard University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told reporters at the National Press Club in Washington.

Additional reports claimed Nielsen actually opposed the reinstatement of the family separation policy at the US-Mexico border. Concerned legislators were also rallying Tuesday to defend Lee Francis Cissna, the director of U.S.

Three years ago, scientists using an extraordinarily sensitive observing system heard the sound of two much smaller black holes merging to create a gravitational wave, as Albert Einstein predicted. That is super cool.' Taking a picture of a black hole is not an easy task. The scientists are now processing the data collected by the telescopes and hope to release a photo in the very near future. He helps analyze the polarization of the M87 black hole's radio emissions, which will enable the researchers to study the black hole's surrounding magnetic fields.

Unlike smaller black holes that come from collapsed stars, supermassive black holes are mysterious in origin.

"We now have visual evidence for a black hole", he continued.

Doeleman said the research "verifies Einstein's theory of gravity in this most extreme laboratory".

"It's a long way away", he said. Now scientists think black holes lurk in the hearts of other galaxies.

Thus, over several days in April 2017, eight radio telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona, Spain, Mexico, Chile and the South Pole zeroed in on M87 as well as Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way.

This twisting motion causes them to release photons, which is the main source of emission from matter close to the black hole.
