Former Obama Lawyer Tied To Manafort Indicted For Ukraine Lobbying Violations

Greg Craig, a former White House counsel in President Barack Obama's administration, has been indicted on charges of making false statements and concealing information about work he performed in 2012 for Ukraine in a case that originated in the Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. From there, the filing reads, Craig began to negotiate with a Ukrainian oligarch representing the country's government for his fee - agreeing that his law firm Skadden Arps be paid $4 million for the work on top of a $150,000 retainer for the former White House counsel.

He faces charges of making false statement and concealing material information in connection with his Ukraine work.

Craig becomes the first Democrat to be indicted in a case arising from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's now-completed probe into Russian election interference.

The DOJ focused its attention on Craig because of actions in 2012 when he was hired by Ukraine to work on a report on former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoschenko, an opponent of Viktor Yanukovych, who at the time was PM. Like Manafort, who also worked with Yanukovych, Craig did not register as a foreign agent for this work. "I think we don't have to with this assignment, yes?" he wrote in a February 2012 email.

In its settlement, Skadden said the firm had relied on "false and misleading oral and written statements" made by Craig, the Post reported sources close to the case as saying. The case was investigated by the FBI's NY field office and is being prosecuted by the US attorney's office in Washington, DC.

Craig is a renowned Washington attorney and was the first White House counsel of former President Barack Obama.

In 2013, the Justice Department sent Skadden a letter informing Mr. Craig that his work on the report required him to register as a foreign lobbyist.

Sudanese army arrests president, takes charge
At least 11 people died in the violence, including six members of the armed forces, the information minister has confirmed. Without delving into details the state owned television said: "The Sudanese army will issue an important statement soon".

The report was billed as independent, and while critical in some ways of Tymoshenko's trial, critics have said it whitewashed a politically motivated prosecution. Craig left Skadden in April 2018.

Late Wednesday, as reports emerged that Craig would be charged, his lawyers said US prosecutors in NY had looked at Craig's overseas work and "that office decided not to pursue charges".

"This case was thoroughly investigated by the SDNY and that office decided not to pursue charges against Mr. Craig".

Craig's lawyers castigated the government for bringing the charges and said their client had refused all requests to participate in Ukraine's media campaign to promote the Tymoshenko report.

A grand jury in Washington, D.C., returned an indictment on Thursday that included two charges, the Justice Department said. Craig - while on the payroll of the Yanukovych government - found that the Yanukovych government's prosecution of its opponent met global standards, in a report that was widely dismissed as a whitewash. The firm also acknowledged it had been paid $4.6 million for the report and not just $12,000, as the Ukrainian government had said at the time.

Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in prison and fined $20,000 after he pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his work for Skadden with Paul Manafort and his protégé, Rick Gates.
