National Basketball Association icon Dirk Nowitzki announces retirement after 21-year career with Dallas

Dallas (33-48) finished its home schedule on Tuesday night with a rousing win during which Nowitzki scored a season-high 30 points, including the first 10 of the game for the Mavericks, and added eight rebounds in 33 minutes.

"As you might expect, this was my last home game", Nowitzki said to the crowd at the American Airlines Center. "This is obviously super super emotional, there's too many people to thank".

Now that their illustrious careers are coming to a final curtain call, both Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki will be remembered by San Antonio Spurs fans as pesky and hard matchups in their own right.

The 40-year-old kept his plans secret until the end of his final home game.

The ground has thawed in most areas since last month, allowing for better absorption than during the aftermath of the March storm. The National Weather Service says a "significant winter storm " is expected to hit western and southwestern Minnesota .

Crawford set another feat Tuesday night, becoming the first player in National Basketball Association history with 50-point games for four different franchises (Bulls, Knicks, Warriors, Suns). The Mavericks legend had a wonderful send off on Tuesday in Dallas and he concluded it by announcing his retirement.

And then, he had to travel to San Antonio to play his final game on the road, against a team who a couple of times had played the part of playoff foil and spoiler to the championship aspirations of Nowitzki and the Mavericks.

"Everybody, players, fans, coaches and staff got to witness history watching him play his last game", San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "It just took a little bit of the fun away from the sport I love". The 60-year-old billionaire has been the team's majority owner since the year 2000, which happened to be Nowitzki's second season in the league.

"It will never be the same around here", said Rick Carlisle, who coached Nowitzki for his final 11 seasons. "I left Germany over 20 years ago and became a Texan".
