The Lakers And Luke Walton Have Agreed To Mutually Part Ways

Walton is considered the leading candidate for the Kings' coaching job, but the team is also expected to consider Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams and San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina.

Lakers guard Rajon Rondo said just this week that Walton "did a hell of a job with what he had, the cards he was dealt". "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

The former Lakers forward went 98-148 after getting his first permanent head coaching job with the 16-time National Basketball Association champions. "This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family".

Beyond the early-season meeting, communication between Walton and the front office was fraught, sources told ESPN.

It might be that Walton did not want to clean out his coaching staff, or parts of his terms with the Lakers were underwhelming, especially this season.

Marcus Smart out for 4-6 weeks
He felt good going through warmups and tried to play, but the injury started bothering him during the game and he was removed. The muscle tear, suffered during Sunday night's loss to Orlando, is expected to sideline Smart for 4-6 weeks.

The Luke Walton era in Los Angeles is over. However, it has since been reported Walton was essentially fired and hoped to remain with the team. Johnson, though, said that his relationship with Walton was fine after the incident, which he considered overblown.

Through it all, the Lakers were 20-14 after beating the Warriors in Oakland on Christmas Day, the game in which James was initially injured.

The team was 26-56 in Walton's first season in 2016-17 before improving to 35-47 in 2017-18.

Ball averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals across 47 appearances (45 starts) during the 2018-19 season. How much influence he wields in this power vacuum with LeBron James and Rich Paul in the picture will determine how the rest of this LeBron-Lakers marriage plays out.

"He's been great for us", Fox said during the All-Star Break.
