Sudan protesters demand swift civilian rule after 'revolution'

The former Sudanese leadership planned to quell mass anti-government protests in Khartoum using military force, that is why the country's military ousted President Omar Bashir from power, a spokesman for Sudan's transitional military council, Shams al-Din Kabashi Ibrahim, said on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia also expressed hope that actions undertaken by Sudan's transitional government will serve the interests of the Sudanese people and will lead to restoring stability and security in the country.

Ibn Ouf had just been sworn-in on Thursday as the chief of a ruling military council, replacing the long-serving President Omar-al-Bashir.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has spearheaded the protests, also posted a nine-point list of demands earlier Sunday, including prosecution of those behind the Islamist-backed military coup in 1989, dissolution of all pro-government unions, a freeze on the assets of top officials in al-Bashir's government and dismissal of all top judges and prosecutors.

Washington imposed sanctions on Sudan in 1997 for its alleged links to Islamists which were lifted in October 2017, but the much awaited economic recovery has failed to materialise. An interim military council was established to oversee the country's transitional period for the next two years.

The UAE welcomed the appointment of Lt Gen Abdulfattah Al Burhan as the new head of Sudan's transitional military council.

Willow Berridge, author of Civil Uprisings in Modern Sudan and lecturer in history at Newcastle University, says the Yemen portfolio saw Burhan work closely with Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

He took the oath of office on Friday after his predecessor General Awad Ibn Ouf stepped down little more than 24 hours after ousting Bashir.

The protests were sparked late a year ago by price hikes and shortages but quickly escalated into an Arab Spring-inspired uprising against al-Bashir, who seized power in a 1989 Islamist-backed military coup.

In remarks broadcast on state TV, he said the military council will rule the country for up to two years until elections and declared the immediate release of all those detained and tried during the current wave of unrest, which began late last year.

Tens of thousands of people have massed outside the army headquarters since April 6, initially to urge the armed forces to back their demand that Bashir be removed.

Speaking on television, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan announced the restructuring of state institutions, the end of a night curfew and the release of political prisoners.

"Himeidti was part of the crimes that happened previously, but at least now he is on the side of the people", said Mohamed, a protester outside the army headquarters who gave only his first name for security reasons.

Burhan's nomination "reflects the ambitions of the brotherly people of Sudan for security, stability and development", UAE state news agency WAM said.

On Saturday evening, the new military ruler named NISS deputy head Jalaluddin Sheikh to the council.

"We will continue our sit-in until all our demands are met", Mr Al Degier said.

"The ministry of foreign affairs is looking forward to the worldwide community to understand the situation and to support the transitional military council.in order to achieve the Sudanese goal of democratic transition", the ministry said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia has promised an aid package, the Saudi Press Agency reported Saturday.
